Wi-Fi: The Backbone of Cloud Features

Nearly every smart bed on the market connects to your home network via Wi-Fi, typically using the 2.4 GHz band for its longer range and better wall penetration. Wi-Fi is essential for features that rely on cloud processing, including AI-driven temperature adjustments, sleep report generation, and companion app synchronization. Without a stable Wi-Fi connection, most smart beds can still operate in a basic manual mode, but you lose the data-driven features that justify the premium price tag.

One common pain point is that smart beds are often placed in bedrooms far from the router, leading to weak signal strength. If your sleep data uploads are failing or your temperature adjustments are delayed, the culprit is almost always Wi-Fi signal quality. A mesh network system or a dedicated Wi-Fi extender in the bedroom can solve this problem. Some newer smart beds, including the Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra, support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, letting the device automatically select the stronger connection.

Bluetooth Low Energy for Setup and Sensors

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) plays a supporting role in most smart bed systems. It is typically used during initial device setup, allowing your phone to discover and pair with the bed before you configure Wi-Fi credentials. BLE is also used by some beds to communicate with external sensors, such as room temperature and humidity monitors that help the bed make better climate control decisions.

The advantage of BLE is its extremely low power consumption, which is why it is the preferred protocol for always-on sensor communication. Sleep Number uses BLE to connect its SleepIQ sensors to the base unit, transmitting biometric data without adding any meaningful load to your electricity bill. However, BLE has a limited range of roughly thirty feet, so sensor placement matters.

Matter: The Universal Standard

Matter is the newest connectivity standard relevant to smart beds, and it promises to solve the biggest frustration in the smart home ecosystem: interoperability. Backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung, Matter provides a single protocol that lets devices from different manufacturers communicate without proprietary bridges or hubs. For smart beds, this means your bed could automatically trigger your smart thermostat, dim your lights, and start a white noise machine when it detects that you have fallen asleep, regardless of which brands you use.

As of early 2026, Matter support in smart beds is still in its early stages. Eight Sleep added Matter compatibility in a firmware update in January, and Sleep Number has announced Matter support for its Climate360 line later this year. The practical benefit right now is mostly limited to basic on/off and status reporting, but the Matter 2.0 specification includes more granular device controls that should enable richer cross-device automations by late 2026.

Which Connectivity Stack to Look For

For most buyers, the ideal smart bed supports all three protocols. Wi-Fi handles the heavy lifting of data transfer and cloud features. BLE manages setup and low-power sensor communication. And Matter future-proofs your investment by ensuring the bed will work with whatever smart home ecosystem you adopt down the road. If you have to prioritize, Wi-Fi is non-negotiable, Matter is highly recommended, and BLE is a nice-to-have that most beds already include.

Before purchasing, check whether the manufacturer has a track record of firmware updates. Smart bed connectivity is a moving target, and the best brands regularly push updates that add new integrations and improve network reliability. A bed that ships with Wi-Fi only but has a history of adding features via updates can be a better long-term bet than one that checks every box at launch but never gets updated.
